AWIHL finals: Day One

Day One of the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey league (AWIHL) finals has seen the Melbourne Ice defeat the Adelaide Adrenaline 2-0, and the Brisbane Goannas winning 6-3 in their game over the Sydney Sirens. The Ice move through to tomorrows grand final while the Adrenaline take on the Goannas in the preliminary final tomorrow morning at 09:00 AEST. The Sydney Sirens will then wait to see the result of the preliminary final, taking on the losing team at 14:30 AEST for the bronze medal. The winning team of the preliminary final will then move through to playoff against the Ice which is scheduled for 17:00 AEST.

The format of the finals series is determined by the final results of the regular season. The teams finishing first and second playoff against each other with the winner advancing to the grand final while the losing team moves on to the preliminary final. The winner of the game between the third and fourth place teams advances to the preliminary final while the losing team moves through to the bronze medal match. The losing team of the preliminary final will then playoff for the bronze medal while the winning team moves through to the grand final game. The games are held over a single weekend with the semifinals held on the Saturday and the preliminary, bronze medal and grand final matches held on the Sunday.
