A brief history
The Australian International Ice Hockey Cup was formed in 2009 to provide a place of competition for the Central Coast Rhinos who left the AIHL after the end of the 2008 season. The 2009 season consisted of four teams; the Rhinos, Canadian Maples, USA Eagles and the Euro Stars. The Maples won the playoffs defeating the Rhinos 7 – 4. The following season the Euro Stars were replaced by the Sydney Giants and the Maples went on to win the 2010 Cup, again defeating the Rhinos in the final. In 2011 the competition grew to five teams with the addition of a second Canadian team, the Toronto Moose. This also resulted in the Canadian Maples being renamed the Montreal Maples. The USA Eagles defeated the Rhinos in the finals, winning their first title and left the Rhinos as runners-up for three years straight. The 2012 season saw the Sydney Giants disbanded, leaving four teams to contest the Cup. The USA Eagles defeated the Montreal Maples 6 – 5 in the final, while the Rhinos finished the tournament in last place. Heading into 2013 the tournament was initially set to feature the same four teams as the 2012 tournament, however due to the recent success of the International Ice Hockey Australian Tour which features Canada versus USA the tournament was reorganised. The organisers dropped both the Toronto Moose and the Central Coast Rhinos from the tournament and renamed the Montreal Maples back to their original name of the Canadian Maples. The tournament schedule featured the Maples versus the USA Eagles in eight games with the Maples winning the tournament seven games to one.
