Australian U18 Women lose opener to Poland

The Australian women’s national under-18 team have lost their opening game of the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship Division I Qualification tournament, losing to Poland 0-11. Forward Sara Sammons was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day Kazakhstan beat China 5-2, Italy defeated Great Britain 3-1 and Austria shutout Romania 12-0. After the end of the first round Australia is sitting last in Group B, trailing leaders Poland by three points, while Austria lead Group A. Australia take on Italy today in their second game of the tournament.
