2017 Women’s World Championship: Australia defeat North Korea

The Australian women’s national team have won their opening game of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group A tournament, defeating North Korea 2-1. Goaltender Michelle Coonan was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day the Netherlands defeated Great Britain 5-4 and South Korea beat Slovenia 5-1. At the end of the first round Australia sit in third place trailing the leader South Korea on goal difference. Australia takes on Slovenia today in their second game of the tournament.
