2017 Ice Hockey Classic to hold game in Newcastle

The organisers of the 2017 Ice Hockey Classic have announced that they will be holding a charity exhibition game on 14 June at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. The match, known as the 2017 Ice Hockey Night in Newcastle, will see Team Canada take on Team USA prior to the Sydney match which is being held on 17 June. League
– The league have made two changes to the June fixture in order to avoid a conflict with the 2017 Ice Hockey Classic. The match between the Sydney Ice Dogs and Newcastle Northstars, originally set for 17 June, has been moved to 16 June. The following weekend the match between the Melbourne Ice and Melbourne Mustangs has been moved from 24 June to 25 June. Fore more information see the schedule on the league website.

Melbourne Mustangs
– The Mustangs have announced the signing of American goaltender James Kruger for the remainder of the 2017 season. Kruger spent the 2016-17 season playing in the Southern Professional Hockey League, lining up for the Fayetteville FireAntz, Pensacola Ice Flyers and Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs. Kruger comes into the team as a replacement for Fraser Carson who is still out due to injury. For more information see the club announcement.

Melbourne Ice & Melbourne Mustangs
– The Ice and Mustangs will compete in a Showcase Charity Event alongside Team Canada and Team USA as part of the 2017 Ice Hockey Classic. The Showcase Event, known as the 2017 Ice Hockey Night in Melbourne, will take place on 22 June 2017 at the O’Brien Group Arena. The Ice will play alongside Team Canada and the Mustangs alongside Team USA in a 4 on 4 exhibition game. For more details see the Melbourne Ice announcement.

Ice Hockey Classic to return in 2017

TLA Worldwide and TEG Live have announced the return of the Ice Hockey Classic series for 2017. The series however has been reduced to only two games with Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth being dropped from the schedule. The Melbourne game has been moved to the smaller Hisense Arena after being held at Rod Laver Arena for the past two years, while the Sydney game remains at Qudos Bank Arena (previously known as Allphones Arena). Team Canada has won the previous two additions, defeating the United States 3-1 in 2015 and 3-2 in 2016.

Team USA win Game 5 of 2016 Ice Hockey Classic

Team USA have won Game 5 of The Wayne Gretzky 2016 Ice Hockey Classic defeating Team Canada 9-3. The final match of the series was a dead rubber after Team Canada took the series victory last week in Game 4. Team Canada has now won both years of the Ice Hockey Classic, winning the 2015 series 3-1.

Team Canada win Game 4 to claim second Ice Hockey Classic title

Team Canada have won Game Four of The Wayne Gretzky 2016 Ice Hockey Classic defeating Team USA 4-3 following a shootout. Team Canada win the series, with one game to play, and claim the Ice Hockey Classic Cup for the second year in a row. The Ice Hockey Classic resumes next week in Brisbane for the final match at the series.

Tonight’s roster for Team Canada also featured the CBR Brave’s Alex Tetreault who was selected as the backup goaltender for Ben Scrivens.

Team USA have won Game Three of The Wayne Gretzky 2016 Ice Hockey Classic defeating Team Canada 4-2. Team USA currently trail Team Canada 1-2 in the five game series. The series resumes tomorrow with Game Four being held at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney before move to Brisbane for Game Five.

Tonight’s roster for Team Canada also featured the Adelaide Adrenaline’s Russel Brewer who was selected as the backup goaltender for Ben Scrivens.

Team Canada win 2016 Ice Hockey Classic opener

Team Canada have won the opening game of The Wayne Gretzky 2016 Ice Hockey Classic defeating Team USA 8-2. Game One of the exhibition series was held at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena with Game Two to take place today at Perth Arena. The two teams are competing in a five games series with Adelaide to host Game Three, Sydney Game Four and Brisbane Game Five.
