2016 ECSL season: Round 1

Round 1 of the 2016 East Coast Super League season has finished with the Penrith Raptors defeating the Blueline Bombers in the season opening game. The match between the Newcastle North Stars and Reach Rebels at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium had to be postponed due to an “officiating problem”. A new date for the game as yet to be announced. As a result of winning the only game of the season so far the Raptors take the lead in the standings, two points ahead of the other four teams. Next week the North Stars host the Raptors in Newcastle and the Sting take on the Rebels in Canterbury.

For the 2016 season the Sting have changed their name to the Sydney Sting as well as introducing a new logo and jersey. The club has played simply as the Sting since its foundation in 2002.

ECSL News: 24 February 2016

League news
– The league has completed their 2016 Draft with 16 new players picked up across four teams. The Sting picked up the most with seven new players added to their roster, the Raptors picked up five, and the Bombers and Rebels took two each. For for more information see the article by the league.
– The league have also expressed their interest in expanding to Canberra with 2017 currently slated for the expansion.

Sydney Heat
– The Sydney Heat have folded and will not participate in the upcoming 2016 East Coast Super League season. The move comes after Ice Hockey NSW instructed the ECSL to reduce the league to five teams. The team are said to have plans to return in the future however it is unclear how many seasons they will be inactive.

Blueline Bombers
– The Bombers have signed eight of their Heat’s former players following the teams departure from the league. For a list of names see the post on the Bombers Facebook page.

2015 ECSL Playoffs: Grand Final Series

The Sting have defeated the Reach Rebels in two games to win the 2015 East Coast Super League playoffs and claim the Warwick Griffith Trophy. The Sting defeated the Rebels 7-1 in Game 1 and 2-1 in overtime for Game 2. The win gives the Sting there third ECSL Championship title, more than any other club apart from the Newcastle North Stars who also have three. The series used a best of three game format instead of the cumulative aggregate format used in the semifinals.

2015 ECSL Playoffs: Semifinals

The semifinals of the 2015 East Coast Super League playoffs have finished with the Reach Rebels and the Sting advancing to the finals series which kicks off on 3 October at the Canterbury Ice Arena. The semifinals are a two game series with the winner being determined on a cumulative aggregate format. In Semifinal A the Rebels defeated the Raptors in both games and finished with an aggregate score of 12-1. In Semifinal B the Sting finished with an aggregate score of 10-6 after defeating the North Stars in both of their games.

2015 ECSL season: Round 24

Round 24 of the 2015 East Coast Super League season has finished with wins for the Reach Rebels, Blueline Bombers and the Sting. The Rebels finish on top of the standings, two points clear of the Sting, and claim the regular season title for the second year in a row. Next week the playoffs get underway with the Sting taking on the Newcastle North Stars and the Rebels playing the Penrith Raptors.

2015 ECSL season: Round 23

Round 23 of the 2015 East Coast Super League season has finished with wins for the Sting and the Reach Rebels. Sundays game between the Sydney Heat and Newcastle North Stars was cancelled for unknown reasons and was expected to be rescheduled, however the final decision was to split the points due to the upcoming playoffs. The Sting remain on top of the standings, even on points and goal difference with the Rebels. Next week five of the six teams are in action across four games, with the North Stars sitting out the round on a bye.

Round 21 of the 2015 East Coast Super League season has finished with wins for the Newcastle North Stars, Sydney Heat, the Sting and Reach Rebels. The Sting remain on top of the standings, one point clear of the second placed Rebels. Next week the North Stars take on the Rebels in Canterbury and then host the Blueline Bombers in Newcastle on the Sunday.

2015 ECSL season: Round 18

Round 18 of the 2015 East Coast Super League has finished with the Newcastle North Stars defeating the Sting 7-3 in the only game of the round. The other match of the round between the Blueline Bombers and Reach Rebels had to be postponed due to a lack of officials and is expected to rescheduled. Despite not playing on the weekend the Rebels move back in to top position in on the standings, edging out the Sting on goal difference. Next week the Sting take on the Sydney Heat in Canterbury and the Penrith Raptors play the Bombers in Penrith.

Update: The game between the Bombers and the Rebels has been rescheduled to 31 August and will be played at the Sydney Ice Arena.
