2018 U18 World Championships: Australia relegated

The Australian men’s national under-18 team have lost 1-7 to Lithuania in their final game of the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division II Group A tournament. Goaltender James Downie was named best Australian player of the match and best Australian player of the tournament. In other games of the day Great Britain defeated South Korea 4-3 and Poland beat Estonia 4-3 in overtime. Australia finish the tournament in last place and are relegated to Division II Group B for 2019. Great Britain finish at the top of the standings ahead of Lithuania and gain promotion to Division I Group B for 2019.

The Australian men’s national under-18 team have lost 0-16 to Poland in their fourth game of the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division II Group A tournament. Goaltender Jakob Doornbos was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day Great Britain defeated Lithuania 3-2 and South Korea beat Estonia 4-3. Australia remain in last place on the standings, nine points behind the leaders Poland. Australia take on Lithuania today in their final game of the tournament. The last time these two teams met was at the 2007 World Championship Division II Group B tournament where Australia lost 2-8.

2018 U18 World Championships: Australia lose to Estonia

The Australian men’s national under-18 team have lost 0-8 to Estonia in their third game of the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division II Group A tournament. Forward Kale Costa was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day Poland defeated Great Britain 5-4 and Lithuania beat South Korea 2-1. At the end of round three Australia remain in last place on the standings, nine points behind the leaders Lithuania. The teams have a rest day today before returning on Friday where Australia take on the Poland. The game will be the first meeting between these two teams.

The Australian men’s national under-18 team have lost 2-9 to Great Britain in their second game of the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division II Group A tournament. Alternate captain Michael Riley picked up one of the teams two goals and was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day Poland defeated South Korea 4-0 and Lithuania beat Estonia 7-0. At the end of round two Australia remain in last place on the standings, six points behind the leaders Great Britain. The teams have a rest day today before returning on Wednesday where Australia take on the Estonia. The last time these two teams met was at the 2012 World Championship Division II Group B tournament where Australia lost 4-7.
