2015 AIHL Playoffs

The 2015 AIHL Playoffs have finished with the Newcastle North Stars defeating the Melbourne Ice 3-2 in overtime. The win gives the North Stars their fifth Goodall Cup and first since 2008. The North Stars progressed to the finals after defeating the CBR Brave 4-3 in the semifinal, while the Ice defeated the Perth Thunder 1-0 in their semifinal. For the third year running the finals were sponsored by Air Canada.

2015 season awards:

2016 Ice Hockey Classic

TLA Worldwide and Nine Live have announced the return of the Ice Hockey Classic series for 2016. The series will again feature Canada and the United States competing in four games in four cities across Australia. Melbourne, Perth and Sydney remain on the schedule, with Brisbane being dropped in favour of Adelaide. Canada won the 2015 edition of the Ice Hockey Classic, defeating the United States three games to one.

2015 ECSL season: Round 21

Round 21 of the 2015 East Coast Super League season has finished with wins for the Newcastle North Stars, Sydney Heat, the Sting and Reach Rebels. The Sting remain on top of the standings, one point clear of the second placed Rebels. Next week the North Stars take on the Rebels in Canterbury and then host the Blueline Bombers in Newcastle on the Sunday.

Newcastle North Stars
The Newcastle North Stars have announced their 2015 player awards today as follows:

Perth Thunder
Toni Kluuskeri has signed with Narvik Hockey of the Norwegian First Division for the upcoming 2015-16 season. The season will be Kluuskeri’s first in Norway, having previously played in France, Sweden and his native Finland.

Sydney Bears
Joseph Harcharik has signed with Sollentuna HC of the Swedish Hockeyettan for the upcoming 2015-16 season. The season will be Harcharik’s first in Sweden, having come to the Bears from Orlik Opole of the Polska Liga Hokejowa.

CBR Brave
The CBR Brave have announced their 2015 player awards today as follows:

The club has also announced the formation the CBR Brave Foundation. It has been established to help the team in raising funds for mental illness, depression and suicide prevention with a focus on young men. The Foundation will provide annual grants to charities in these areas and there are plans to launch an online auction next week to start the initiative.

Newcastle North Stars
Geordie Wudrick has broken the records for most points and most goals scored in a season, finishing with 91 points which included 44 goals and 47 assists. Wudrick’s 91 points beats previous record holder Adison DeBoer’s 85 points which was set in the 2011 season for the Canberra Knights. His 44 goals meanwhile beats the previous record of 42 set by the Gold Coast Blue Tongues’ Matt Amado in 2011.

Melbourne Ice

2015 AIHL season: Round 18

Round 18 of the 2015 Australian Ice Hockey League has finished with wins for the Melbourne Mustangs, CBR Brave, Adelaide Adrenaline, Melbourne Ice and Newcastle North Stars. The North Stars top the standings at the end of the regular season, seven points ahead of the second placed Ice. Next week the 2015 AIHL Playoffs are being held at the Medibank Icehouse in Melbourne. The CBR Brave will take on the Newcastle North Stars in the first semifinal and the Perth Thunder take on the Melbourne Ice in the second with the two winning teams progressing to the final on Sunday.

2015 AIHL season: Round 17

Round 17 of the 2015 Australian Ice Hockey League has finished with wins for the Melbourne Mustangs, Sydney Bears, CBR Brave, Melbourne Ice, Adelaide Adrenaline and Newcastle North Stars. The North Stars remain on top of the standings, ten points clear of the Melbourne Ice, and claim the H Newman Reid Trophy as the 2015 regular season winners. Following the weekends results both the Perth Thunder and CBR Brave locked in their spot for the 2015 playoffs, joining the Ice and North Stars. Next week all eight teams are in action across six games in the final round of the regular season.
