2015-16 AJIHL season: Round 10

Round 10 of the 2015-16 Australian Junior Ice Hockey League has finished with wins for the Melbourne Glaciers, Perth Pelicans and Sydney Sabres. The Glaciers remain on top of the standings, 16 points clear of the second Sabres. Next Week the two Perth teams host the Sabres and Wolf Pack while the two Melbourne teams sit the round out on a bye.

2016 AJIHL Tier 2 Wild Card tournament

The Brisbane Blitz have defeated the Adelaide Generals 3-2 in the final of the 2016 Australian Junior Ice Hockey League’s Tier 2 tournament to earn the wild card spot in the upcoming 2016 AJIHL playoffs. The Blitz finished the preliminary round with three wins from four games, finishing two points ahead of the second placed Generals and seven ahead of the hosts, the Junior Brave. The Blitz and Generals advanced to the final of the tournament where the Blitz bounced back from their loss earlier that day to defeat the Generals. The Blitz will now compete in the 2016 AJIHL playoffs which are scheduled for 27 and 28 February at the Penrith Ice Palace.

Australia U20 defeat China

The Australian men’s national under-20 team have won their final game of the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division II Group B tournament, defeating China 8-2. Goaltender Alex Tetreault was named best Australian player of the match and Zachary Boyle was named best Australian player of the tournament. In other games of the day Romania defeated Spain 6-5 and Serbia shutout Belgium 9-0. Australia finish the tournament in fifth place, eleven points behind tournament winners Romania. Following their loss to Australia the Chinese are relegated to Division III for 2017 while the Romanian’s are promoted to Division II Group A.

2015-16 AWIHL season: Round 7

The final round of the 2015-16 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League regular season has finished with wins for the Adelaide Adrenaline, Sydney Sirens and Melbourne Ice. The Ice finish the season in first place, four points ahead of the second placed Sirens and claim the regular season title. With the regular season now finished the AWIHL now moves onto the playoffs which begin on 6 February at the O’Brien Group Arena.

2015-16 AJIHL season: Round 9

Round 9 of the 2015-16 Australian Junior Ice Hockey League has finished with the Melbourne Glaciers defeating the Melbourne Whalers 4-0 at the O’Brien Group Arena. The win sees the Glaciers increase their lead at the top of the standings and are now thirteen points ahead of the second placed Sydney Wolf Pack. Next week the two Melbourne teams battle it out again at the O’Brien Group Arena, the Perth teams take on each other for the first time at the new Cockburn Ice Arena and the Sydney teams return to action in a double header at the Penrith Ice Palace.

AJIHL Wild Card tournament announced

The Australian Junior Ice Hockey League have announced the formation of a Tier 2 tournament that will see three teams from non-member states compete for the Wild Card spot in the upcoming 2016 AJIHL playoffs. The Adelaide Generals, Brisbane Blitz and Canberra Junior Brave will compete in a double round-robin style tournament, followed by a top two final, at the Phillip Ice Skating Centre from 28 January to 30 January with the winner being awarded a spot in the playoffs. The AJIHL playoffs begin on the 27 February with the Wild Card winner taking on the team ranked third of the regular season qualifiers.

Australia U20 lose to Serbia

The Australian men’s national under-20 team lost their fourth game of the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division II Group B tournament, losing to Serbia 0-10. Daniel Pataky was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day Spain defeated Belgium 6-1 and Romania beat China 12-3. After the end of the fourth round Australia remain in fifth place, trailing the leaders Spain by twelve points. The teams now have a rest day and return to the ice on Saturday with Australia taking on China in their last game of the tournament.

Thunder sign Göransson

The Perth Thunder have announced the signing of defender Per Daniel Göransson for the upcoming 2016 season. Göransson, who is a Swedish national, recently acquired his Australian permanent residency allowing him to join the team as a local. Göransson spent last season playing for the Northern Vikings in the Western Australian Super League and has previously played for Hammarby IF and Team Uppsala in the Allsvenskan.

Belgium defeat Australia U20

The Australian men’s national under-20 team lost their third game of the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division II Group B tournament, losing to Belgium 0-6. Forward Lynden Lodge was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day Spain defeated China 10-1 and Romania beat Serbia 5-4 in overtime. After the end of the third round Australia remain in fifth place, trailing the leaders Spain by nine points. Australia take on Serbia today in their fourth game of the tournament.

AWIHL release promo video ahead of the 2016 finals

The Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League have released a promotional video for the upcoming 2016 finals which will be held on 6 February and 7 February at the O’Brien Group Arena in Melbourne. The finals will feature all four teams and will be live streamed from the Arena by Callingallsportsbrisbane.com and Thor Technology Australia.
