Australians overseas: Michael Smart

Goaltender Michael Smart recently completed his second season with the Birmingham Lions. Playing in the British Universities Ice Hockey Association Smart finished the 2019-20 season with a 0.920 save percentage and a 4.11 goals against average from nine games. Smart started playing overseas in 2010 and to date has played a total of three seasons in Canada, three in the United States and two, including the most recent, in the United Kingdom.

Locally Smart is a former member of the AIHL’s Sydney Bears and Perth Thunder, debuting for the Bears in 2012 before moving to the Thunder in 2013. He is a former representative of the Australian under-18 team having competed in the 2008 and 2009 World Championships.
