The Sydney Ice Dogs have defeated the Newcastle Northstars 3-2 in overtime in Game 1 of the 2020 Hawkesbury Classic. The Ice Dogs held the lead for the first two periods with goals from Grant Toulmin and Shannon McGregor before the Northstars levelled it in the third with their own goals from Shane Southwood and Liam Manwarring. Kale Costa then scored in overtime for the Ice Dogs to win the game. Competition resumes on 8 August with Game 2 at the Macquarie Ice Rink.
