A new league, the Pacific Hockey League, was announced today. The leagues first season is set for 2022 though the exact schedule is yet to be revealed. Teams from Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, the Central Coast and Melbourne are expected to compete in the inaugural season and a team from New Zealand is slated to join in 2023. Directors of the newly formed league include former AIHL goaltender Dayne Davis, Ross Fisher of iceHQ, Isaac Morrison, former Sydney Ice Dogs head coach Andrew Petrie and Robert Sykes.
Three teams appear to have been confirmed at the time of posting – the Adelaide Avalanche, Brisbane Rampage and the Melbourne Ducks. The Adelaide Avalanche revive the name used by the club that competed in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) from 2000 to 2008. The Brisbane Rampage was formed in 2020 with the aim of joining the AIHL for the 2022 season, though with this development it seems that ambition may have passed. The Melbourne Ducks were established in 2021 as an exhibition team based out of iceHQ in Reservoir, Victoria and played two games against the Melbourne Ice in May 2021.
