The Australian men’s national team have defeated New Zealand 3–2 following overtime in the opening game of the 2024 Trans-Tasman Ice Hockey Challenge at the O’Brien Icehouse. Australia took the lead in the first period with a goal from Jake Ruck. New Zealand then responded in the second period with two straight from Chris Eaden and Callum Burns before Mackenzie Caruana scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game up. With neither team able to score in the third period the match headed into overtime leading to Ethan Hawes scoring the winner for Australia. Competition resumes tomorrow for Game 2 of the three-game series.
