Newcastle Northstars re-sign Montgomery and Spelde

The Newcastle Northstars have announced the re-signing of Matthew Montgomery and Ethan Spelde for the upcoming 2024 Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) season. The two goaltenders will serve as backup to Charlie Smart whose re-signing was confirmed back in March.

Goaltender Matthew Montgomery played three games for the Northstars in his 2023 debut season, recording a save percentage of 0.820 and a 6.36 goals against average. During the AIHL’s off-season Montgomery competed for the Sydney Sabres in the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League where he averaged a 0.895 save percentage from four games. More recently he made his debut for the Australian under-20 national team at the 2024 World U20 Championships.

Goaltender Ethan Spelde played four games for the club in 2023, recording a save percentage of 0.766 and a 8.55 goals against average. Since making his league debut in 2022 he has competed in nine AIHL games and averages a 0.829 save percentage.
