The Australian men’s national team have lost 2–4 to the Iceland men’s national team in their third game of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II Group A tournament in Madrid, Spain. Australia’s goals were scored by Mackenzie Caruana and Vadim Virjassov with Caruana’s being his first in international competition. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to goaltender Anthony Kimlin.
In the other games of the day Croatia defeated Israel 12–1 and Spain beat Georgia 2–0. At the end of the third round Australia remains in fifth place on the standings while Croatia has moved into first with nine points. The teams have a rest day today and return on 21 April where Australia will take on Israel for their fourth game of the competition. The two teams last met at the World Championships in 2016 where Australia won 11–3.
