2016 AW2IHL: Series 2

Series 2 of the Australian Women’s Tier 2 Ice Hockey League has finished with the Western Australian Hawkettes defeating the New South Wales Bombers 6-0 in the final. The league expanded to six teams for Series 2 with the South Australian Valkyries and Western Australian Hawkettes joining the competition. The New South Wales Bombers who won Series 1 back in March currently lead the 2016 Combined Series standings with 28 points.

Series 3 of the AW2IHL is scheduled for 1 October and 2 October 2016 at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium.

On a very minor note, since Series 1 the league name has been slightly re-organised from the “Australian Tier 2 Women’s Ice Hockey League” to the current format of “Australian Women’s Tier 2 Ice Hockey League”. Basically just “Tier 2” being shifted one place to the right. As a result I have adjusted the acronym to be AW2IHL.

2016 A2WIHL: Series 1

The New South Wales Bombers have won Series 1 of the Australian Tier 2 Women’s Ice Hockey League (A2WIHL) after finishing on top of the standings. The Canberra Pirates finished in second place, four points behind the Bombers and the Melbourne White Dragons finished in third with nine points. Series 1 of the A2WIHL was held at the Phillip Ice Skating Centre and is designed to act as a feeder league to the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League.

Of note the two Melbourne teams revived the old logo of the former Melbourne Dragons of the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League, which is now playing as the Melbourne Ice. The Dragons logo itself being a copy of the Mobile Mysticks who competed in the ECHL from 1995 to 2002.

Series 2 of the A2WIHL is scheduled for 9 July and 10 July 2016 at the O’Brien Group Arena with a South Australian team expected to join. A third series is also planned for Newcastle from 1 October to 3 October 2016 with confirmation likely to come this week. Points from Series 1 will carry over to Series 2 and then to Series 3.

For more information on the A2WIHL see the official announcement from Ice Hockey Australia.
