Australia U18 win World Championship Division III Group A

The Australian under-18 team have won the gold medal of the 2014 IIHF U18 World Championship Division III Group A tournament after defeating New Zealand 6-0 in their final game. The win which saw Australia finish the tournament three points clear of Israel in second place and earned them promotion to the 2015 IIHF U18 World Championship Division II Group B tournament. Australia took the lead early in the game with Hayden Sheard scoring the second minute. Sheard scored again in the eigth minute and Jake Knott got one past the New Zealand goaltender to finish the first period 3-0. Australia doubled their lead in the second period with goals from Kieren Webster, Luke Zvonicek and Casey Kubara. The third period remained scoreless with the game ending 6-0 and Nicholas Mizen recording the Australia’s only shutout of the tournament. Luke Zvonicek was named best Australia player for the game.

In the other games of the day Chinese Taipei beat Mexico 2-1 and Israel finished with a 7-2 win against Bulgaria. Australia finished the tournament in first place on 12 points followed by Israel, Chinese Taipei, Bulgaria, Mexico and New Zealand. Following the completion of the tournament awards were handed out by the IIHF directorate with Daniel Pataky being named the Best Defenceman of the tournament. Best goaltender went to Bulgaria’s Dimitar Videnov and Ilya Spektor of Israel won the Best Forward award. Casey Kubara was selected by the coaches as Australia’s best player of tournament.

2014 ECSL: Round 2

Round 2 of the 2014 ECSL season has concluded with wins to the Sydney Heat and Sting. The win for the Heat sees them move to the top of the standings with two wins, followed by the Sting and North Stars who have won a game each. Round 3 gets underway next Saturday with the Reach Rebels taking on the Newcastle North Stars and the Blueline Bombers playing host to the Sting. The other game of Round 3 will be held on Sunday with the Sydney Heat coming up against the Penrith Raptors.

Thunder Sign Toy

The Perth Thunder have announced via their first newsletter of 2014 the signing of American defenceman Corey Toy. Toy has spent the last two seasons playing for the Fayetteville FireAntz in the Southern Professional Hockey League and prior to that played for the Greenville Road Warriors in the ECHL and the Arizona Sundogs in the Central Hockey League. Toy is set to arrive on Monday and is expected to start training with the team on Tuesday.

The team also announced that they will be holding an inter-squad warm up match on 19 April at the Perth Ice Arena and that former gold level sponsor, C.D. Dodd Scrap Metal Recyclers have now become a platinum level sponsor. C.D. Dodd join Goodlife Health Clubs who also signed on with the club as a platinum level sponsor for the 2014 season.

2014 Wilson Cup: Game 3

The Sydney Ice Dogs have defeated the Sydney Bears 8-1 in Game three of the 2014 Wilson Cup. This completes the round robin event with the Ice Dogs topping the standings with five points. They will now play the Newcastle North Stars in the final. The game is scheduled to kick off next Saturday at 17:45 at the Sydney Ice Arena.

Australia U18 Beat Mexico

The Australian under-18 team have won their second game in a row at the 2014 IIHF U18 Championship Division III Group A tournament defeating Mexico 3-2. Australia took the lead midway through the first period with a goal from Jamie Campbell. The team then held their one goal advantage until the 36th minute of the game when Mexico’s Arunas Bermejo leveled the scores. Australia however bounced back with two goals in two minutes from Ryan Smith and Casey Kubara to go into the break with a 3-1 lead. Australia led with their two goal advantage right into the last minute of the game before Mexico’s Aleksei Gendron got one past Tynan Theobald. Australia managed to hold on to their lead and the game finished 3-2. Joshua Hansen was named Australia’s best player of the game.

In the other games of the day Israel easily accounted for Chinese Taipei with a 7-3 win and New Zealand snuck past Bulgaria with a goal in the last minute to win 5-4. With their third win of the tournament Australia now move to outright first in the standings and are three points clear of Israel, Mexico and Bulgaria. The teams will now take a days break before returning on Sunday to play their final game which will see Australia take on New Zealand.

Ice Sign Jeff Smith

The Melbourne Ice have announced the signing of Canadien defenceman Jeff Smith for the upcoming 2014 season. Smith who has spent the last two seasons playing in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) for the Hull Stingrays has previously played in the AHL, ECHL and the Eredivisie

Brave Sign Pitkanen

KeuPa HT of the Finnish Suomi-sarja league have announced that their goaltender Petri Pitkänen will play for the CBR Brave in the upcoming 2014 AIHL season. The Brave had previously announced that they had signed two Finnish imports but had not announced the names of the players. Pitkänen has been playing in the Suomi-sarja since 2011 and recently attended try-outs for Mestis club LeKi before being released back to KeuPa HT.

Ice Down Mustangs in Exhibition Game

The Melbourne Ice have defeated the Melbourne Mustangs 8-3 in their ehibition game held at the Medibank Icehouse yesyerday. Both teams will now play an exhibition game against the Australian national team with the Mustangs game being held on the 3rd of April and the Ice’s game on the 5th. Both games will be held at the Medibank Icehouse and are being played as part of the national teams preperations for their upcoming World Championship tournament as well as serving as a fundraiser for the team.

Australia U18 Get Past Israel

The Australian under-18 team have won their third game of the 2014 IIHF U18 Championship Division III Group A tournament defeating Israel 3-2. Australia went into the first break with a 2-1 advantage thanks to goals to Hayden Sheard and Jamie Campbell. The team managed to hold that lead until the 55th minute when Israel scored the equaliser however Australia quickly took back the lead less than two minutes later with Kieren Webster scoring of an assist from Riley Major and Ryan Smith. Israel called a time-out in the last minute however opted not to pull their goaltender and the game finished 3-2 in Australia’s favour. Keiren Webster was named best Australian player for the game.

In the other games of the day Mexico defeated New Zealand and Chinese Taipei beat hosts Bulgaria. Australia is equal on points with Mexico and Bulgaria and are currently sitting in second place based on goal difference. Australia now face Mexico at in their fourth game of the tournament.

Australia U18 Lose to Bulgaria

The Australian under-18 team have lost their second game of the 2014 IIHF U18 Championship Division III Group A tournament going down to Bulgaria 0-1. Both teams were held scoreless until the second minute of the third period when Daniel Dilkov got one past Australia’s goaltender Tynan Theobald. Australia then pulled Theobald with just over a minute left in the game. The man advantage didn’t last long with Remy McGuiness receiving a penalty for cross-checking in the final minute and Australia finished the game scoreless. Anthony Barnes was named best Australian player for the game.

In the other games today Chinese Taipei defeated New Zealand 3-2 in a shootout and Mexico beat Israel 5-2. With one win from two games Australia has slipped to fourth in the standings due to goal difference while Bulgaria has moved into outright first with two wins from two games. The team will now take a days break before coming up against Israel in game three on Thursday at 13:00 local time.
