The Brisbane Goannas have announced that they will re-brand as the Brisbane Lightning ahead of the 2022–23 AWIHL season. The change in branding aligns the club with the Brisbane Lightning men’s team that competes in the Australian Ice Hockey League. Founded in 2006 the Goannas are the last of the founding clubs to have a name change after the Adelaide Assassins became the Adelaide Adrenaline and then the Adelaide Rush, the Melbourne Dragons rebranded as the Melbourne Ice, and the Sydney Sirens had a brief run as the North Star Sirens before returning to their original name.
