2023 Women’s U18 World Championships: Australia defeats Turkey

The Australian women’s national under-18 team have defeated Turkey 3–1 in their opening game of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship Division II Group A tournament. Australia’s goals were scored by Tara Baker, Molly Lukowiak and Phoebe Roberts, with Baker’s being her first in IIHF competition. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to Phoebe Roberts while the Australian team named Molly Lukowiak their best offensive player of the game, Katrina Rapchuk their best defensive player and the hardest worker award went to Courtney Mahoney.

In the other games of the day Latvia defeated Mexico 6–1 and the Netherlands beat Great Britain 3–1. At the end of the first round Australia sits second on the standings, trailing Latvia on goal difference. The team takes on the Netherlands today for their second game of the tournament. The two teams last met at the 2022 World Championships where Australia won 2–1 to claim the bronze medal in the Division II tournament.
