2023 Women’s U18 World Championships: Australia defeats Latvia

The Australian women’s national under-18 team have defeated the Latvian women’s national under-18 team 3–2 in their fourth game of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship Division II Group A tournament. Elana Holub opened the scoring for the team followed by two goals from Courtney Mahoney. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to Elena Holub while the Australian team named Courtney Mahoney their best offensive player of the game, Madison Smith the best defensive player and the hardest worker award went to Gabrielle Arps and Lucy York. With their win Australia earns promotion to Division I Group B for 2024 with a game to spare.

In the other games of the day the Netherlands defeated Turkey 2–1 and Great Britain shutout Mexico 3–0. At the end of the fourth day Australia remains at the top of the standings with a now unbeatable lead of five points over the second placed Latvia. The team takes on Great Britain today for their final game of the tournament. The two teams recently met in an exhibition game prior to the tournament where Australia lost 3–4 and last met at the World Championship level in 2018 where Australia lost 1–5.
