2023 Men’s U20 World Championships: Australia defeats New Zealand

The Australian men’s national under-20 team have defeated the New Zealand men’s national under-20 team 6–2 in their second game of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division III tournament. Dmitri Kuleshov finished the game with a hat-trick of goals followed by Maxim Lyashenko who scored two and Justin Dixon with one which was also his first goal in international competition. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to forward Justin Dixon who was also given the hardest worker award by the team and Dmitri Kuleshov was named the players’ player.

In the other games of the day Kyrgyzstan defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4–3, Israel shutout Bulgaria 8–0 and Turkey beat South Africa 9–3. At the end of the second day Australia remains at the top of the Group A standings while Israel continues to lead Group B. The teams have a rest day today and return tomorrow where Australia will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina for their third game of the tournament. The two teams last met at the World Championships in 2022 where Australia won 12–1.
