The Australian women’s national team have defeated the South African women’s national team 10–0 in their opening game of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group B tournament in Cape Town, South Africa. Ashlie Aparicio, Michelle Clark-Crumpton and Sharna Godfrey led the scoring with two goals apiece followed by Anna Badaoui, Lindsey Kiliwnik, Marina Nottle and Sara Sammons who scored the remaining four goals. Marina Nottle’s goal was also her first in international competition while goaltender Sasha King recorded her first shutout at the international level. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to forward Ashlie Aparicio.
In the other game of the day New Zealand defeated Croatia 15–1 while Belgium sat out the opening round on a bye. The tournament was originally also set to include Turkey, but they withdrew their team on 15 February. At the end of the first day Australia sits second on the standings, trailing New Zealand on goal difference. Australia has a rest day today and returns on 22 February where they will take on Belgium. The two teams last met at the 2015 World Championships where Australia won 3–0.
