2023 Women’s World Championships: Australia defeats New Zealand to finish in second place

The Australian women’s national team have defeated the New Zealand women’s national team 5–2 in their final game of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group B tournament in Cape Town, South Africa. Michelle Clark-Crumpton led the team in scoring with three goals followed by Sharna Godfrey and Sara Sammons with one each. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to forward Sharna Godfrey and defender Marnie Pullin was given the hardest worker award by the team.

In the other games since the last update Belgium defeated New Zealand 4–2 and South Africa beat Croatia 2–1 on Friday and in Sunday’s other game Belgium defeated South Africa 4–1. Australia finishes tournament in second place with nine points from four games. Belgium finishes in first and earns promotion to Division II Group A for 2024 while Croatia comes in last and is relegated to Division III Group A for next season. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the tournament was given to forward Ashlie Aparicio. Sharna Godfrey led the tournament in scoring with 14 points and Sasha King finished as the leading goaltender based on save percentage, finishing with a perfect 100% from 160 minutes in net.
