2023 Men’s World Championships: Australia loses to Spain

The Australian men’s national team have lost 1–8 to the Spanish men’s national team in their second game of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II Group A tournament in Madrid, Spain. Australia’s only goal was scored by Vadim Virjassov. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to defender Jamie Woodman.

In the other games of the day Croatia defeated Iceland 6–2 and Georgia beat Israel 7–3. At the end of the second round Australia has dropped to fifth place on the standings while Spain leads with six points. The teams have a rest day today and return on 19 April where Australia will take on Iceland for their third game of the competition. The two teams last met at the World Championships in 2018 where Australia won 3–0.
