The Perth Thunder have defeated the Newcastle Northstars 4–1 in their play-in game of the 2023 Goodall Cup playoffs. Perth had qualified for the match after finishing the regular season in third on the Hellyer Conference standings and Newcastle had qualified following their second-place finish on the Rurak Conference standings. Perth now advance to the semifinal round on 26 August where they will take on the CBR Brave. Competition resumes tomorrow with the Melbourne Mustangs hosting the Brisbane Lightning at the O’Brien Icehouse in the second play-in game of the playoffs.
