The Melbourne Mustangs have defeated the Brisbane Lightning 8–3 in their play-in game of the 2023 Goodall Cup playoffs. Melbourne had qualified for the match after finishing the regular season in second on the Hellyer Conference standings and Brisbane had qualified following their third-place finish on the Rurak Conference standings. Melbourne now advance to the semifinal round on 26 August where they will take on the Sydney Bears. Also set for 26 August is the other semifinal game, which will see the CBR Brave take on the Perth Thunder. Both games will be held at the O’Brien Icehouse.
