2024 Men’s U20 World Championships: Australia loses opener to Iceland

The Australian men’s national under-20 team have lost 0–6 to the Iceland men’s national under-20 team in their opening game of the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division II Group B tournament in Belgrade, Serbia. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to forward Julian Friederich.

In the other games of the day Belgium defeated Chinese Taipei 3–1 and Romania beat Serbia 3–2 following a shootout. At the end of the first round Australia sits at the bottom of the standings while Iceland leads with three points. Australia takes on Chinese Taipei today for their second game of the tournament. The two teams last met at the 2020 World Championships where Australia won 5–0.
