Australians overseas 2023–24: United States (part 6)

Continuing our look at the Australian players who were competing overseas during the 2023–24 season. Today is Part 6 of 9 featuring Australians in the United States.

Ruben Nalos: First season in the United States. Playing for the Boston Hockey Academy’s 15U AAA team in independent competition, Nalos recorded a goal and four assists from 50 games. He also competed in two games for Boston in the Elite Prospects Cup Series’ 15O division where he recorded an assist.

Zachary Okabe (AHL profile and St. Cloud State profile): Starting 2023–24 off in his fifth season with St. Cloud State University in the NCAA’s Division I, Okabe recorded 10 goals and 14 assists from 38 games. In March, Okabe signed an amateur tryout contract with the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL) where he remained for the rest of the season, competing in ten games and scoring three points.

Andrew Penca (ACHA profile): Second season with the United States Naval Academy. Playing in the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s (ACHA) Division 1, Penca competed in 24 games, recording three goals and four assists.

Matilda Pethrick (SUNY Oswego profile): First season with SUNY Oswego after spending 2022–23 with Northfield Mount Hermon. Playing in the NCAA’s Division III, Pethrick competed in 16 games and recorded an assist. Heading into 2024–25, Pethrick as been named on the team for a second season.

Reilly Piersimoni: Fourth season with Phillips Exeter Academy and second with the Northern Cyclones. Playing for Exeter in the United States High School’s Preparatory system, Piersimoni recorded eight goals and seven assists from 30 games. With the Northern Cyclones, Piersimoni competed on their 19U AAA Prep team in independent competition where he scored 11 goals and 13 assists in 16 games.
