The Melbourne Ice have won the 2016 Joan McKowen Trophy after defeating the Sydney Sirens 7-6 following a shootout. The Ice started the playoffs weekend with a loss in the qualifiers against the Sirens and were sent to the preliminary final against the Brisbane Goannas for a second attempt at qualifying for the final. The preliminary saw the Ice defeat the Goannas 7-4 to advance to the grand final. In the third-place game the Adelaide Adrenaline defeated the Brisbane Goannas 5-2.
The win for the Ice give the team their fourth consecutive Joan McKowen Trophy and their fifth overall.
