Adelaide Adrenaline Women become the Adelaide Rush

The Adelaide Adrenaline of the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League have changed their name to the Adelaide Rush for the upcoming 2016-17 season. The club was originally founded as the Adelaide Assassins in 2005 before changing their name to the Adrenaline in 2011 after a merger with the AIHL club.

2016 AWIHL playoffs

The Melbourne Ice have won the 2016 Joan McKowen Trophy after defeating the Sydney Sirens 7-6 following a shootout. The Ice started the playoffs weekend with a loss in the qualifiers against the Sirens and were sent to the preliminary final against the Brisbane Goannas for a second attempt at qualifying for the final. The preliminary saw the Ice defeat the Goannas 7-4 to advance to the grand final. In the third place game the Adelaide Adrenaline defeated the Brisbane Goannas 5-2.

The win for the Ice give the team their fourth consecutive Joan McKowen Trophy and their fifth overall.

2015-16 AWIHL season: Round 7

The final round of the 2015-16 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League regular season has finished with wins for the Adelaide Adrenaline, Sydney Sirens and Melbourne Ice. The Ice finish the season in first place, four points ahead of the second placed Sirens and claim the regular season title. With the regular season now finished the AWIHL now moves onto the playoffs which begin on 6 February at the O’Brien Group Arena.

2015-16 AWIHL season: Round 6

Round 6 of the 2015-16 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League has finished with wins for the Sydney Sirens, Melbourne Ice and Brisbane Goannas. The Ice remain on top of the standings, two points clear of the second placed Sirens. The AWIHL now has a week off before resuming for the final round of the regular season on 23 January with the Goannas in Adelaide and the Sirens hosting the Ice in Canterbury.

2015-16 AWIHL season: Round 5

Round 5 of the 2015-16 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League has finished with wins for the Adelaide Adrenaline, Sydney Sirens and Melbourne Ice. The Ice remain on top of the standings, two points clear of the second placed Sirens. The AWIHL now breaks for the Christmas period and will resume on 9 January with the Goannas hosting the Sirens and the Adrenaline taking on the Ice in Melbourne.

Round 3 of the 2015-16 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League has finished with Sydney Sirens defeating the Adelaide Adrenaline in both games at the Adelaide Ice Arena. The Melbourne Ice remain on top of the standings, one point clear of the second placed Sirens. Next week the Ice travel Brisbane to take on the Goannas at Ice World Boondall.

Round 2 of the 2015-16 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League has finished with wins for the Melbourne Ice and Sydney Sirens. The Melbourne Ice remain on top of the standings, seven points clear of the Sirens and Adrenaline. The AWIHL returns for Round 3 on 21 November with the Adrenaline hosting the Sirens in Thebarton.

2015-16 AWIHL season: Round 1

Round 1 of the 2015-16 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League has finished with wins for the Adelaide Adrenaline and Melbourne Ice. The Ice take the opening lead in the standings after winning both of their games in regular time. The Adrenaline sit two points of the Ice after being forced into a shootout for both of their wins against the Goannas. The AWIHL returns for Round 2 on 7 November with the Ice hosting the Goannas and the Adrenaline taking on the Sirens in Canterbury.

Prior to the start of the season the Sydney Sirens competed in an practice match against the Sydney Wolf Pack of the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League. The Sirens lost the game 2-7.

Adelaide Adrenaline

  • Josef Rezek has been appointed head coach of the Adelaide Adrenaline Women’s team for the upcoming 2015-16 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL) season. Rezek was previously appointed to the position for the 2014-15 AWIHL season but left the role prior to start of the season. Rezek’s other coaching experience includes acting as the assistant coach of the Australia men’s national under-20 team at the 2014 and 2015 IIHF World U20 Championships.
