The Australian men’s national under-20 team have lost their opening game of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division II Group B tournament, going down to Spain 2-15. Forward Brendan Kong was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day Belgium defeated Mexico 5-3 and South Korea beat Serbia 3-2 following a shootout. After the end of the first round Australia sit in last place on the standings, three points behind the leaders Spain. Australia takes on Mexico today in their second game of the tournament.
