2024 Women’s World Championships: Australia shuts out South Africa

The Australian women’s national team have defeated the South African women’s national team 14–0 in their fourth game of the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group B tournament in Istanbul, Turkey. Michelle Clark-Crumpton, Lindsey Kiliwnik, and Sara Sammons led the scoring with two goals each followed by Ava Calabria, Sharna Godfrey, Courtney Mahoney, Georgia McLellan, Kaitlyn Malthaner, Phoebe Roberts, Nikki Sharp, and Kate Tihema with one each. Calabria’s and McLellan’s goals were also their first in international competition. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to forward Lindsey Kiliwnik.

In the other games of the day North Korea defeated Hong Kong 2–1 and Turkey beat New Zealand 2–1. At the end of the fourth round Australia has moved up in to first place on the standings, pushing North Korea down to second due to goal difference. Turkey meanwhile moves up into fourth and New Zealand drops down to fifth. The teams have a rest day today and return on 7 April where Australia will take on North Korea for their final game of the competition. The two teams last met at the 2019 World Championships where Australia lost 2–4.
