The Australian men’s national under-20 team have defeated the Icelandic men’s national under-20 team 5–4 in their third game of the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division II Group B tournament in Belgrade, Serbia. Lachlan Sucher led the scoring for Australia with two goals followed by Julian Friederich, Finlay Gordon, and Brayden Maybee with one each. Friederich’s goal was his first in international competition, while Gordon and Sucher’s goals were their first in at the under-20 level. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to forward Daniel O’Handley. The result is a marked improvement compared to the last meeting between the two teams in 2024 where Iceland won 6–0.
In the other games of the day, Spain defeated Belgium 2–0 and Serbia beat Israel 5–2. At the end of the third round, Australia remains at the bottom of the standings and Spain move into the lead, pushing Israel down to second. Serbia meanwhile moves up to third on the standings, pushing Belgium down to fifth. Australia takes on Serbia today for their fourth game of the tournament. The two teams last met at the 2024 World Championships where Serbia won 4–0.
