The Canberra Pirates have opened an expression of interest process to seek players for a potential Canberra-based team to compete in the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL). News of the expansion bid was broken by 6ix Dub Hockey earlier in the week, stating that the existing team’s had held a meeting during the 2026 AWIHL playoffs. A time frame for introducing a new team into the league is currently unclear, though 6ix Dub Hockey states that it is unlikely to happen until after the 2027–28 season.
