Round 1 of the 2016 East Coast Super League season has finished with the Penrith Raptors defeating the Blueline Bombers in the season opening game. The match between the Newcastle North Stars and Reach Rebels at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium had to be postponed due to an “officiating problem”. A new date for the game as yet to be announced. As a result of winning the only game of the season so far the Raptors take the lead in the standings, two points ahead of the other four teams. Next week the North Stars host the Raptors in Newcastle and the Sting take on the Rebels in Canterbury.
For the 2016 season the Sting have changed their name to the Sydney Sting as well as introducing a new logo and jersey. The club has played simply as the Sting since its foundation in 2002.
