2024 Women’s World Championships: Australia defeats Turkey in opener

The Australian women’s national team have defeated the Turkish women’s national team 6–2 in their opening game of the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group B tournament in Istanbul, Turkey. Australia’s goals were scored by Michelle Clark-Crumpton, Stephenie Cochrane, Lindsey Kiliwnik, Courtney Mahoney, Matilda Pethrick, and Nikki Sharp. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to defender Kirsty Venus.

In the other games of the day North Korea defeated New Zealand 5–1 and Hong Kong shutout South Africa 6–0. At the end of the first round Australia sits second on the standings, trailing Hong Kong on goal difference. Australia takes on New Zealand today for their second game of the tournament. The two teams last met at the 2023 World Championships where Australia won 5–2.
