Australian Women lose opener to Mexico

The Australian women’s national team have lost their opening game of the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group B tournament, losing to Mexico 1-2 following a shootout. Forward Shona Powell was named best Australian player of the match. In other games of the day Iceland defeated Turkey 7-2 and Spain beat New Zealand 11-1. After the end of the first round Australia is sitting in fourth place, trailing the leaders Spain by two points. Australia take on Turkey today in their second game of the tournament.
