Day 1 of the 2023 Australian Ice Hockey League regular season has finished with wins for the Brisbane Lightning, Melbourne Mustangs, Perth Thunder and Sydney Bears. With their win the Brisbane Lightning top the standings in the Rurak Conference and lead the league’s combined standings while the Melbourne Mustangs sit at the top of the Hellyer Conference. Competition resumes tomorrow with the Melbourne Ice hosting the Newcastle Northstars, the CBR Brave taking on the Central Coast Rhinos in Erina and the Sydney Ice Dogs playing the Brisbane Lightning in Macquarie.
Today’s match between the Sydney Bears and Sydney Ice Dogs was also the first game of the 2023 Wilson Cup series. The Cup is awarded to the winner of the regular season series of games between the two teams. Last year’s edition of the Wilson Cup was won by the Sydney Bears four games to nil.
