2024 Women’s World Championships: Australia shuts out Hong Kong

The Australian women’s national team have defeated the Hong Kong women’s national team 6–0 in their third game of the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group B tournament in Istanbul, Turkey. Sharna Godfrey led the team in scoring with two goals followed by Kaitlyn Malthaner, Sara Sammons, Nikki Sharp, and Kirsty Venus who picked up one each. Malthaner’s and Venus’ goals were also their first in international competition. The IIHF award for best Australian player of the match was given to forward Sara Sammons.

In the other games of the day New Zealand shutout South Africa 14–0 and North Korea defeated Turkey 7–1. At the end of the third round Australia remains second on the standings, trailing the first placed North Korea on goal difference. New Zealand meanwhile moves up into fourth, pushing Turkey down to fifth place. Australia takes on South Africa today for their fourth game of the competition. The two teams last met at the 2023 World Championships where Australia won 10–0.
