The Newcastle Northstars have defeated the Sydney Ice Dogs following a shootout in Game 3 of the 2020 Hawkesbury Classic. The Ice Dogs took the lead heading into the first break with goals from Aiden Sillato, Connor Lee and Connor Bolger while the Northstars managed a single goal from Robert Malloy. During the second period the Northstars got one back with a goal from John Kennedy before the Ice Dogs responded with a goal from Aiden Sillato, his second for the night. The Northstars then levelled it in the third with goals from David Ferrari and Richard Tesarik forcing the game into overtime. After both teams failed to convert in the overtime period the game went to a shootout with the Northstars sealing the win in the fifth round.
The Ice Dogs currently lead the best-of-seven series two games to one. Competition resumes on 22 August with Game 4 at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium.
