Round 3 of the 2019 Australian Ice Hockey League season has finished with wins for the Sydney Ice Dogs, Newcastle Northstars, Sydney Bears and Perth Thunder. Following their two wins the Northstars move into first on the standings, three points clear of the second placed Brave. Next week seven teams are in action across seven games while the Bears sit the round out on a bye.
The Newcastle Northstars have announced the signing of forward Connor Schultz for the 2019 season, replacing Tim Stanger who is out with a shoulder injury. Schultz spent the 2018-19 season playing for the Sydney Sabres in the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League where he recorded nine points in 15 games. He has also represented Australia at the 2018 and 2019 U18 World Championships. For more information see the article from the Newcastle Herald.
The Newcastle Northstars have announced the death of former player Micheal Blackwell. Blackwell played three seasons in the Australian Ice Hockey League, two for the Northstars in 2003 and 2007 and one for the Gold Coast Blue Tongues in 2008. For more information see the announcement from the club.
On 25 April we posted that Tom Lash had made his debut as a backup goaltender for the Melbourne Ice in their 21 April game against the Adelaide Adrenaline. This is now known to be incorrect and the game card has been updated to list Thomas Munro as the backup.
We apologise for the mistake and now know that four days is probably not enough time for the game cards to be accurate.
Defenceman Jackson Gallagher and forward Hamish Murray also made their debut in the Australian Ice Hockey League, lining up for the CBR Brave in their 27 April game against the Adelaide Adrenaline. Gallagher spent his 2018-19 season playing for the Sydney Sabres in the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League, recording five points in 16 games. Murray on the other-hand hasn’t got much of a background to write about besides one appearance for the Australian Capital Territory in the 2014 Ginsberg National Championship.
